"Yesterday is gone, tomorrow is yet to come.

We only have today. Let us begin."

(Mother Teresa, 1910~1997)

Few people in the world haven't heard of Mother Teresa, right? She was deeply respected for her lifelong dedication to helping the poor in Calcutta, India, and was often called the "Mother of the Poor." Mother Teresa was originally from Albania, and her birth name was Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu. After taking her final vows with the Sisters of Loreto (a Roman Catholic religious congregation of women dedicated to education), she adopted the name Teresa. In 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and in 1980, she received India’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna.

She passed away in 1997 at the age of 87. In 2016, Pope Francis canonized her as “Saint Teresa of Calcutta.” Although she won the Nobel Prize as an Indian citizen, Albania claims her due to her heritage, India because of her work there, and North Macedonia because of her birthplace (Isn't it great that four different countries claim her as one of their own?) In 2009, I had the chance to visit Mother Teresa’s house in Calcutta while attending my good friend’s wedding, and it was a deeply moving experience.

The quote above is one of my favorite sayings. Even if we don't reflect on it as grandly as Mother Teresa, the reality is that each of us is only ever given "today". Whatever we aspire to achieve, it’s only by focusing on today’s work and setting aside yesterday and tomorrow that we can realize our goals. And we must start now.

Here are two more inspiring quotes from Mother Teresa:
  • "If you judge people, you have no time to love them."
  • "If you can't feed a hundred people, then feed just one."

Thanks for reading. Wish you grow rich slowly and surely!
